Aria vs Apple Dictation
Updated 15 October 2026 · 3 min read
Keep Apple Dictation if you dictate in one language, into whatever app you already use, and do not want to think about it. It is free, it is built in, and for plain single-language dictation it is genuinely good. Choose Aria Magic Voice instead if you switch between English and Chinese mid-sentence, or if you want dictation to behave like a full input method rather than a dictation box.

Where Apple Dictation is genuinely better
- It is already there. Nothing to download, no permissions to grant, nothing to break.
- Zero cost, zero account. No purchase, no sign-in, no key.
- It is Apple's. It follows system conventions and accessibility settings.
If these three points decide it for you, use Apple Dictation. This page is not an argument that it is bad — for single-language dictation it is a strong default.
Where it structurally cannot go
- Code-switching. Apple lets you switch between configured languages while dictating; Aria is designed for English and Chinese mixed inside a single sentence, like "deploy 这个到 staging".
- A personal vocabulary that grows. Aria Max learns from your corrections on your Mac, so product and project names you fix once tend to stay fixed.
- Being an input method. It is a dictation box. It does not change how you type, correct, or switch between composing and dictating.
A fair test, if you are considering switching
- Dictate the same 200-word paragraph in both, in the language mix you actually write.
- Count the edits: punctuation, wrong characters, invented words.
- Try both with Wi-Fi off — this is where "on-device" claims get tested.
- Check what each one needs permission to read. Aria asks for microphone and accessibility, and does not upload audio.
